Menezes, 50, replaced Dunga after the 2010 World Cup, guiding Brazil to the last eight of the Copa America in 2011.
That defeat against Paraguay, plus Brazil's failure to win gold at London 2012, put the coach under pressure.
The decision comes two days after Brazil won the Superclasico de las Americas against Argentina.
Brazil lost the second leg 2-1 in Buenos Aires, but triumphed on spot-kicks in the tie which featured only players who play in the domestic leagues of the two countries.
Brazil Football Federation director Andres Sanchez said president Jose Maria Marin made the change because he "wants new methods and new planning" ahead of the World Cup.

In regards to Neymar and how he is capitalising on the poor, Brazilian league, I have a couple of points to make. 1) Pele did the same thing, but in an era when the quality of football in Brazil was even worse. 2) Neymar has sheer, undeniable raw talent. 3) Brazilian football isn't dire at all. How much Brazilian (non state-champs) football have you actually seen?

all very well sacking your coach to 'boost world cup hopes', but what, or who, comes next? Assuming a Brazilian manager will be sought, as seems to be their norm and obviously there are swathes of coaches i know not of, but i can't see how this will have a positive impact so soon (in context) before hosting the world cup. Not many matches, and none in competitive circumstances to test a new system

Brazil is best when she is Brazilian. Menezes = conservative & not nearly 'Sambista' enough for the 'Canarinho's.' We need the passion to be running through the free-spirited team & for Brazil to show her true, glorious side. I can't see anything else happening other than Brazil bringing the WC home on home soil - Brazilians are proud, & they'll be damned if anybody else wins in their back garden.

@8 "Brazil actually have a fair few players who are world class - in terms of being good enough to play for any of the world's leading teams: Dani Alves, Ramires, Pato, Luiz Gustavo, Marcelo"
Marcelo, Dani alves yes. Pato has a worse injury record than Joe Cole. Ramires is OK. So is gustavo.
When Neymar does it somewhere else than a dire Brazilian league i'll agree.

Brazil won't go for a foreign manager, the odds on favourite is a return to Luiz Felipe Scolari, who is currently unemployed after being sacked from Palmeiras.
